MUSIC: the Maine

themaineGUYS, yesterday I bought myself the best present EVER… Tickets to see the Maine on April 25th on their Lovely Little Lonely tour!  I haven’t gone to a concert since last summer, so it’s TIME, y’all.

Anyway, I’ve loved the Maine for years, but this last album is shaping up to be the best yet.  Angsty as always, fast and dance-able, and my favourite album artwork in a long time.  The first song they released off of it, Bad Behaviour, was like the ultimate throwback to the good ol’ emo days, and Black Butterflies and Deja Vu, aka my current obsession, is unlike anything else I’ve heard before.  I.  LOVE.  IT.  Then today they released a song called Do You Remember (the other half of 23).  Guess what?  It’s also perfect.

The new album is out on April 7th, and until then they’re posting clips of the songs as a count down on their instagram – definitely follow them if you don’t already.

so?  thoughts on the new tunes?  thoughts on anything at all?  how’s like?  love me, pay attention to me.

MUSIC: there’s a new all time low song and I am LIVING!!

Screen Shot 2017-02-17 at 1.41.19 PM.png

GUYS it has been a long long long time coming, but today a new All Time Low song came out and I am LIVING for it!!!  yes yes yes YESSS the boys are back.

I’m struggling to say anything remotely intelligent about this because right now my brain is mostly just like “!!!!!!!”.  I really like the direction they’re going though, the song is different but still distinctly All Time Low – the lyrics are, as always, 100% on point, and the video is full of spooky lighting, blank stares, and Alex driving a vintage mustang (I fear that I am not selling it very well but I promise it’s sick).

ALSO, “young renegades”.  New album name????

I was always kind of obsessed with the word “renegade”, ever since Paramore did the singles club and put out their song renegade.  It’s the most basic and predictable pop-punk theme but it’s just so relatable (especially for my little Sagittarius heart) that it gets me every time.

Speaking of Paramore!  All Time Low also announced that they’ve been signed to Fuelled By Ramen for the last year and kept it a secret (rude).  But seriously, fbr has basically all the biggest bands in “the scene” – Paramore, Panic! At The Disco, Twenty One Pilots… Fall Out Boy at one point, yes? – and now All Time Low is officially on the roster.  Exciting!

ANYWAY, sorry for this excessively rambly and excited post – it’s not even a monday!  But I have had a lot of coffee, and there is new music from one of my favourite bands in this whole entire universe, so it’s a good day for me.  AND next week is reading week.

Life! Is! Good!

On that note, I’m off to campus to write a midterm.  I have a good feeling about it, so please send me all of your luck and good vibes.  If you haven’t heard the new song/seen the new video, check it out here and let me know what you think!!

MUSIC MONDAY: it’s what you want – it’s what you need.

ymas-night_people

GUYS, you NEED to listen to You Me At Six’s new album Night People.  I am obsessed.

These guys have been one of my favourite bands since I was just a li’l babe – I remember Hayley Williams talking about them once and obviously I rushed to look them up straight away.  Ever since then (back in 2008-ish) I’ve been in love.

I think one of my favourite things about them is that (much like Paramore, my all time fave) every album sounds so different from the last.  They have a really distinct, specific sound to each album and I think it really shows their growth.  Of course this isn’t a selling point for everyone – if you were expecting another Sinners Never Sleep (which up until now has been my fave album of theirs) then you might be disappointed by this.  But if you’re ready for something completely fresh and different (but still full of heavy drums, killer vocals, and addictive melodies) then HERE YA GO.

I was relieved by this album to tell you the truth – their last album, Cavalier Youth, was probably my least favourite release from them… ever.  So in my PERSONAL opinion, this album feels like they’ve got their groove back.  But you’ll have to make that decision for yourself.

If you’re looking for some real bangers, great for working out or being angry, try the title track, Night People.  Also definitely Plus One, and Swear.  Josh has a great growly tone and I am so in love with these songs.  If you want to stare out the window as rain pours down then definitely Take On The World should be your go-to.  I feel like every You Me At Six album has at least one song that kind of breaks your heart – Opposites Attract, Fireworks, Crash… all great jams, but Take On The World is among my favourites now.

SO what are your thoughts on Night People?  It feels like it’s been a long time coming – and I say it was worth the wait.  You?

happy listening,

– L

PS, these guys also put on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen (although I say that about pretty much everyone I go see).  Def check them out if you get the opportunity!

5 Angsty Throwback Christmas Tunes | BLOGMAS Day 2

Are you already tired of Mariah Carey and Michael Buble?  Because I sure am.  If you’re ready to shake things up (and get a li’l angsty), here are five fabulous Christmas tunes from all your emo faves.
#throwback, am I right?

1. Yule Shoot Your Eye Out – Fall Out Boy

Even when it’s not Christmas this song is just catchy.  And I mean… it’s Fall Out Boy.

2. Merry Christmas, Kiss My Ass – All Time Low

I remember in high school me and my friends used to love posting these lyrics on each other’s facebook walls because it made us look cool and edgy and filled with rage.  Some things never change.

3. Happy Holidays, You Bastard – Blink-182

No angsty Christmas playlist is complete without this song.

4. Santa Stole My Girlfriend – The Maine

Remember when the Maine put out that holiday album?  2008 was a simpler time.

5. All I Want For Christmas Is You – My Chemical Romance

Last but not least!  I know we’re all tired of this song, but it’s just… better when it’s My Chem.  Right?

Oh, and as a bonus, the highlight of last Christmas – when All Time Low, 5 Seconds of Summer, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and John Feldman got together to create this little miracle:

Wow.  I’m feeling infinitely more festive already.

What’s your favourite Christmas song?  Are you a traditionalist, or do you like to switch things up a little?

Talk to ya tomorrow!!

MUSIC MONDAY: jams for the week.

guys I swear to you all I have been listening to lately is Shawn Mendes’ album Illuminate.  It doesn’t feel nearly punk rock enough for me but god damn, that boy has the voice of an angel.

shawnmendes_illuminate
face of an angel too…..

if you want to have a dramatic karaoke sesh in your room while you fold your laundry, check out Like ThisMercy, and Patience – those are my faves.  And if you want to feel all the warm fuzzy feels, then Lights On is gunna be your jam.

bayfaction
bonus: feel so cool + hip because these guys haven’t taken over the world yet (unlike Shawn-y)

I’m also really really into the band Bay Faction – especially their songs Bloody Nose and Jasper Wildlife Assoc.  They have this really cool grungey sound with killer bass lines and really unique vocals.  They kinda make me just want to like… make poor life choices.  You should listen and tell me if you also get this vibe?  Maybe I’m just real crazy.

:

Some other gr8 songs for you:

  • Trampoline, by the Unlikely Candidates
  • Modern Swinger, by the Pink Spiders
  • Rosa Dear, by Ruth
  • Technicolor, by SAINTE (why is everyone capitalizing everything?  Why am I a part of this trend?)
  • All In It, by Justin Bieber (sorry but… musical diversity is important and this song is a jam)

This is all that comes to mind right this moment.  What’s on your playlist for the week?

It is monday again – how did that happen so fast?  I’m currently sitting at my desk working on about 30 different assignments all at once and feeling uncharacteristically productive about it all.  Who’s ready to take on the week?  (spoiler alert: not me)

As a side note: I’m currently doing some research for a paper about the construction of violent masculinity.  I’m reading a piece by Jackson Katz right now and he is just… the best.  I saw him speak a few years ago and watched his film Tough Guise.  I just love hearing smart people talk?  Damn.  If you’re curious, here is a link to a clip from Tough Guise, and here is a link to a TED talk that he gave about why violence against women is a men’s issue (seems like a no brainer but – uh…. never mind).  He’s very easy to listen to, super relatable, and generally just an easy to like kinda human – especially if you’re tired of the hegemonic masculine bullshit that is literally EVERYWHERE.

(oh boy, there was a side of me that has yet to be really expressed on this blog.  Feminism, ohh, scary.)

OKAY, anyway, I’ve got about a thousand papers to write so I’m off.  Love love love to all of you – congrats on surviving monday.
